Just got flattened by Hikari’s RENTAL FAMILY. It wears its heart on its sleeve and is so generically heartwarming that I suspect a lot of people will not care for it, but I found its sense of empathy irresistible, and Brendan Fraser is the perfect vessel for it. #TIFF50 pic.twitter.com/T7HhbHjOPC

Mental health is extremely stigmatized in Japan, and the unique concept of Hikari’s RENTAL FAMILY helps people find much-needed connections by selling happiness. Overall it’s a sincere, open hearted film led by a great Brendan Fraser. Gorgeous music and locations, too. #TIFF50 pic.twitter.com/ovoFkZM2XM

RENTAL FAMILY: Brendan clearly passionate about this project and its heart is in the right place. Gestures toward meta-themes of performance, loneliness and cultural alienation. Yet never pushes those ideas in any challenging directions. Found it cloying, surface-level, and far… pic.twitter.com/0pHRGruonP

Super sentimental and touching, RENTAL FAMILY is an undeniable crowdpleaser that delves into human connection and loneliness without all that much depth. Brendan Fraser is wonderful in this maudlin but well-intentioned tear-jerker. Very fluffy stuff but easy to enjoy. #TIFF50 pic.twitter.com/bpPAta6QEj
