Director Chinonye Chukwu (Clemency) knows how to pull great performances from actors. With NYFF premiere Till (10/14 UAR) Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven) delivers as the grieving mother of lynched 14-year-old Emmett Till. But Chukwu milks the drama with heavy-handed closeups.

TILL wisely tells the harrowing true story of the murder of Emmett Till from the perspective of his courageous & inspiring mother. Danielle Deadwyler gives an emotionally powerful & awe-inspiring performance for the history books. Conventionally scripted but artfully directed. pic.twitter.com/93XJmjlmLU

Danielle Deadwyler is quite impressive at times in Till. Chinonye Chukwu has a vision and commits to it. Respect for a true auteur. But the film is often too mannered in tone and execution. Will that hurt Deadwyler's awards chances? We'll see. pic.twitter.com/HkZIYz12hh

Danielle Deadwyler is such a stunner in #Till. She takes that character on such a gigantic emotional journey from timidity, then to devastation, and then righteous, courageous anger. The kind of performance you can’t look away from and keep thinking about for weeks

If Danielle Deadwyler doesn’t win the Oscar for her incredible performance in TILL, the Academy is going to have a lot to answer for. pic.twitter.com/MrfRBfZ1mS

I don’t know how an Oscar voter can see Deadwyler’s performance in #Till and not give her Best Actress. The intensely tight control that fissures at just the right moment. The agony upon seeing Emmett for the first time. The transformation from grief to resolve. Unreal. #NYFF60 pic.twitter.com/PexOpFroMU

Just to be clear, any potential Oscar best actress lineup that does NOT include Danielle Deadwyler for #Till, is INCORRECT and should be immediately thrown in the TRASH.

This woman is a star. Through and through.
Also, give Chinonye Chukwu the money to make whatever she wants. pic.twitter.com/wX92IxaTmo
#Till will also remind audiences that Whoopi Goldberg is a formidable actress...with two standout scenes as Emmett’s grandmother. Each of them shows the kind of precision and deliberate technique only masters like Goldberg could achieve. https://t.co/Zw5Mq0Vqi7 via @variety pic.twitter.com/G9wMO7nHjq

Lo de la "participación escasa" de Goldberg no debería ser un problema a la hora de nominarla. Mira a Judy Dench en Belfast...
